Lakers’ Big Win Without LeBron

On November 14, 2025, the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 118–104 in an NBA Cup game — even though LeBron James was not playing.
LeBron is recovering from sciatica, but there’s good news: he’s taken part in some workouts and 5-on-5 practices, showing progress toward a return.

Doncic, Ayton and Reaves lead the Lakers past the Pelicans

Reaves and Doncic Step Up

With LeBron out, Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic took charge:

  • Reaves scored 31 points and added 7 assists.

  • Doncic had 24 points, 12 assists, and 6 rebounds, with 20 of his points coming in the first half.

Domination Inside: Ayton’s Impact

Deandre Ayton was a force in the paint. He made 10-of-11 shots, grabbed 16 rebounds, and added 20 points
His strong presence helped the Lakers pull away, especially in the third quarter, when the team went on an 11–0 run.

Pelicans’ Struggles & Notable Performance

For the Pelicans, Trey Murphy III had a big game, scoring 35 points
But overall, New Orleans couldn’t keep up with the Lakers’ pace and inside strength.

Thinking About LeBron’s Return

Coach JJ Redick is optimistic but realistic: LeBron’s return has to be carefully managed.
Redick and the team are aware that LeBron coming back will shift the team’s chemistry — the core of the offense has been Reaves + Doncic so far.
LeBron is expected to practice with the main Lakers squad soon, and if things go well, he might start soon.

Why This Win Matters

  1. Team Depth: Without LeBron, the Lakers showed they can win — that’s a great sign for their depth.

  2. Cup Momentum: This was part of their NBA Cup play, and now they are 2–0 in their group. (Los Angeles Times)

  3. Confidence Boost: Reaves, Doncic, and Ayton all showed they can lead, which gives the coach more options when LeBron returns.

Bottom Line: This was an important win for the Lakers. Even without their superstar, they played with heart, efficiency, and strong teamwork. LeBron’s return might be coming, but the team is already proving it can handle adversity.
